The Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant is located in the township of Smithville, North Carolina (near Southport). It covers a total area of about 1200 acres and first opened in 1975. The plant is currently operational and is owned mainly by Duke Energy Progress.
The Brunswick station includes two boiling water reactors. Each unit produces 990 MW of power and has an annual output of 14,811 GWh. Brunswick was the first nuclear power plant to be located in North Carolina and has the ability to power about one million homes. It was also the first plant to use the "shell rotating device."

The Brunswick plant has licenses to operate until 2034 and 2036, about forty years after the plant originally opened. The water used to cool down the reactors is eventually released into the Atlantic Ocean, which produces minimum waste and has very little impact on the surrounding environment.
